Laboratory centre
The new hospital's laboratory centre will house all of the hospital's laboratory activities in a single location. The laboratory centre will have centralized/core clinical laboratory for routine analysis of most clinical bio-samples including blood samples. Laboratory specialties including immunology, clinical microbiology, clinical biochemistry, genetics, pathology, haematology and blood bank. Laboratories for scientific research. The pathology unit will have a morgue and autopsy facilities, as well as facilities for forensic pathology.
The laboratory centre will be linked to the treatment centre and other hospital buildings with a special pneumatic tube system, by which the hospital units can send samples to the laboratory centre in a matter of minutes. The laboratory centre will also have a reception for samples from outside the hospital.
Laboratory activities are, by nature, an ever-changing field, so the working environment is organic and prone to changes. Laboratory activities are constantly evolving, so it is important that the facilities are flexible and able to meet these changes. The laboratory centre is the site of complex operations and working facilities for top experts.
Plans are for a helipad on the roof of the laboratory centre. It would be linked to the emergency unit and other wards in the treatment centre via a connecting bridge. The helipad must be able to receive helicopters of various types. Its size is determined with reference to helicopters that are longer and heavier than those currently employed by the Icelandic Coast Guard in order to ensure its usefulness in the future.
